A marriage celebrated abroad, a divorce decided in another country, an inheritance with property in Brazil and part of the family abroad, a power of attorney to represent someone who cannot travel. These situations join two legal systems and almost never require travel. The connection to Vargem is usually in the civil registry or the property, not in the current address of the person seeking help.

The field of international law covers legal situations connected to Brazil and another country. See the most requested international law services in Vargem, São Paulo.
Complementary Law 227/2026 filled the gap identified by the Supreme Federal Court in Theme 825 and defined which state is competent to levy ITCMD (inheritance and gift tax) in situations with an element abroad. In the inheritance of a deceased person domiciled abroad, the tax belongs to the state where the heir is domiciled; in a gift coming from abroad, to the state of the recipient. Collection on these terms still depends on state law and the tax anteriority rule.
The rule in art. 961 of the Code of Civil Procedure is that a foreign decision only has effect in Brazil after recognition by the STJ. Paragraph 5 of the same article opens a relevant exception: a foreign judgment of uncontested divorce has effect regardless of recognition. In practice, this separates two routes with very different costs and timelines, and sorting between them is the first thing to do.
The property regime does not automatically follow the law of the country of the ceremony. Art. 7, §4, of the Law of Introduction to the Norms of Brazilian Law provides that the regime follows the law of the spouses' domicile and, if different, that of the first marital domicile. The consequence appears years later, in the division of assets or probate, when it is discussed what was common and what was separate property.
The alternative of divorcing in the country of residence has a consequence: the foreign judgment will later need to be annotated or recognized in Brazil to be valid here. Comparing both routes before starting avoids doing the same procedure twice, in two countries, with two costs.
An acknowledgment made abroad must be transcribed to have effect in Brazil. If there is no voluntary acknowledgment, a paternity suit is possible, and it proceeds even with the other party living abroad, through service by the appropriate route, including international legal cooperation mechanisms.
The order of the steps matters: apostilling after translating, or translating from a copy without an apostille, usually results in rejection and rework. Birth, marriage and death certificates, judgments, powers of attorney and diplomas follow the same procedure, with specific requirements from each recipient.
